3 YEARS EARLIER

I got a response the day after I applied. Two days later, I had an interview. And a day after that, I got my final acceptance call. When six days had passed, I decided to leave without saying goodbye to Jordan. I just knew that he would try to change my mind and that he’d probably succeed, too.

I went home to spend a few days with my father before I had to miss him for an indefinite amount of time. During the interview, the military personnel had asked me if I would be open to the possibility of staying for an extended period, like a year or more. I almost screamed yes. This new job was a possibility to further develop myself as an infantry soldier, just as it was the perfect way to forget all about my feelings for a particular infantry general.

Fact was that I had to move on with my life, and that wouldn’t happen as long as I stayed near him.

On the way back to the main base, I visited Hunter and told her I was leaving. She made me promise I wasn’t running away from something, and I said I wasn’t, but I could tell she didn’t really believe me.

I entered my room, turned my computer on, and logged in to the army’s communication system.

My heart skipped a beat as I checked my inbox and saw I had some unread messages from Jordan.

Our online conversations were brief. We usually talked face to face.
